My first baseball rant of the year

We now stand at 32 days before Spring Training. Personally, I think that should be a National Holiday. Seriously, why not?

So, now that baseball is here, are we ready? By "we" I mean the Yankees, Mets, and 51s. Today I'll be looking at the Yankees.

If there was one thing we learned last year, it's that pitchers rule. Forget the whole 2010 being the "Year of the Pitcher". With few exceptions, it's always the "Year of the Pitcher". Now that there decent rules in place for drug abusers, expect to see more "YotP". Why do I bring this up? Because, IMHO, the Yanks didn't do anything to capitalize on this. They put all their eggs in one basket going after Cliff Lee and it backfired on them. Although, to be honest, I would have done the same thing. The reports stated that Lee wanted a long contract. The Yanks offered him the most years with the most money. In a "normal" world that would have worked. Lee suckered everyone and signed for less years/less money. Net result: Phillies going to the playoffs.

Let's not forget the Tampa Bay fire sale. Carl Crawford going to the BoSox along with A-Gon, Jenks, and Wheeler. In the Yankees defense, they didn't any of those guys. Net result: BoSox going to the playoffs.

The Yankees got Russell Martin. ... ... ... Ok.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the moves, or lack thereof, made by the Yankees. It's all about pitching, pitching, pitching. The Yankees don't have it. Yeah, CC is still the Ace. This is good. And then it all goes downhill from there.

Will the Yanks make it to the playoffs. They might. With the roster as it stands it is going to be an uphill battle. Let's hope they make some moves before the trade deadline.
